In order to be in line with the Paris Agreement the EU has committed to achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050 under the European Green Deal. This poses a challenge for some industry sectors, among them the cement sector. Mitigation efforts such as energy efficiency and a fuel switch are not enough for this sector to achieve carbon-neutrality. Most mitigation efforts target energy-related emissions, whereas process emissions will require an expansive roll-out of emerging technologies. This study by the NewClimate Institute aims to identify and analyze key emerging technologies and asses their potential through scenario analysis. Furthermore, it proposes a concept for accelerating mitigation ambition and offer high-level policy recommendations.
